HOWTO: Recover Transactions from a Backup File

[Archived] – Last Updated:

If you have made a backup copy of your Keep Track data (.atf) file, and want to restore that file, do the following.

If you are not synchronizing your Keep Track info** **between a Pocket PC or Smartphone and a Windows PC, you can just copy the backup file back over the original file (first closing Keep Track).

If you are synchronizing your Keep Track info between your Windows Mobile device and your Windows PC, you’ll need to go through the following steps. Note that in this case, it’s important not to copy .atf files between a Windows PC and a Windows Mobile device, except as described below.

  1. Make sure you have the backup data you want to restore. It should be the same name as your current Keep Track data file:

    | | | | | ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– | | | If Keep Track 2.1 was your first version of Keep Track, this file is called either KTPocketPC.atf on a Pocket PC, KTSmartphone.atf on a Smartphone, or KTWindowsPC.atf on your Windows PC. If you used an earlier version of Keep Track, this file is called Accounts.atf. |

but should not be in the same folder with your current, working data file, which is usually in your Keep Track installation folder. If your backup file is on your Pocket PC or Smartphone, copy it to your Windows PC, and rename it to the Windows PC .atf filename as described above.

  2. Close Keep Track, if it’s running, on both platforms.

  3. Open the ActiveSync window, select Tools, Options, and make sure “Keep Track Transactions,” if present, is not checked. Uncheck it if it is.

  4. Delete your current Keep Track data file on both platforms.

  5. Open the ActiveSync window, select Tools, Options, and check “Keep Track Transactions,” Click “OK”.

  6. You should see a window asking you whether to Combine or Replace the files. Select “Replace …” from the set of options.

  7. Select Tools, Options, and uncheck “Keep Track Transactions.” Click “OK”.

  8. Delete the new Keep Track database file that was just created on your Windows PC. Again, it will be in your KeepTrack install directory, and should be named “KTWindowsPC.atf”.

  9. Copy your old Keep Track data file to the above directory on your Windows PC and rename it to the appropriate name described in step 1.

  10. Open the ActiveSync window, select Tools, Options, and check “Keep Track Transactions,” Click “OK”.

  11. Again select “Replace …” from the set of options.

At this point, your transaction data should be restored and synchronized. Before using Keep Track again, you should check your One-Touch buttons: some of the details (for example, specific categories or To/From values) may not have been retained.
